12 Traits of the Highly Sensitive Personality Type

I’ve recently been making my way through Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Won’t Stop Talking, a book which talks a lot about the extrovert ideal and how our society is shaped to fit the extroverted type. During my read I realised that perhaps I’m not so much the introverted type but more so just a sensitive personality type with some introverted and some extroverted traits. Typically, sensitive personalities tend to be introverted but not all are.

“[for example] highly sensitive people tend to be keen observers who look before they leap. They arrange their lives in ways that limit surprises. They’re often sensitive to sights, sounds, smells, pain, coffee. They have difficulty when being observed (at work, say, or performing at a music recital) or judged for general worthiness (dating, job interviews). But there were also new insights. The highly sensitive tend to be philosophical or spiritual in their orientation, rather than materialistic or hedonistic.” – Susan Cain, Quiet – page 136

I can certainly identify with these traits and let me know if you do too…

1. THEY REACT MORE EMOTIONALLY THAN OTHERS

2. THEY ARE EASILY OVERWHELMED

3. THEY TAKE THINGS TO HEART/PERSONALLY

4. THEY FEEL MORE FOR OTHERS

5. THEY NEED TIME TO ‘COME OUT OF THEIR SHELL’

“When sensitive people are in environments that nurture their authenticity, they laugh and chitchat just as much as anyone else.”

6. THEY FEEL MORE SELF CONCIOUS

7. THEY TAKE LONGER TO MAKE DECISIONS

8.THEY ARE MORE REACTIVE WHEN THEY MAKE A DECISION THEY’RE NOT HAPPY WITH

9. THEY NEED TIME TO WITHDRAW AND BE ALONE

10. THEY BLUSH OFTEN/EASILY AND HATE BLUSHING

“In fact, the very thing that many high-reactives hate most about blushing—its uncontrollability—is what makes it so socially useful. “Because it is impossible to control the blush intentionally,” Dijk speculates, blushing is an authentic sign of embarrassment.”

11. THEY GET WOUND UP EASILY

12. THEY ARE MORE OBSERVANT

How many of these do you identify with? I think being a sensitive person can be a really good thing!
