I AM A FEMINIST BECAUSE…

When Libfemblog started, (well it wasn’t even called Libfemblog but for the life of me I cannot even remember it’s working title) it was mostly a blog about my life, what my goals were, what I was interested in and it did generally have a feminist tone and a political agenda. However, as time progressed it shaped more into a beauty blog and now finally, a feminist lifestyle blog. I think that’s probably it’s main theme and will continue to be in future.

I have defined my feminism a few times. I say my feminism because like anything that you associate yourself with, there will always be different types. People who believe stronger than others in something, people who misunderstand something or people who take things to the extreme and sadly I’ve had to define myself as one of those ‘alright feminists.’

In this post, I want to define to you not only how I’m a feminist but also many of the reasons why I feel the need to express myself as a feminist so here we go-

I am a feminist because I still wrap my coat around myself and place my key between my knuckles when I walk home at night.

I am a feminist because I would rather have a son than a daughter in current society.

I am a feminist because men are mocked for crying or being emotional.

I am a feminist because more of my friends have been sexually harassed than not.

I am a feminist because rape victims are still asked what they were wearing.

I am a feminist because women are underrepresented in government.

I am a feminist because domestic violence towards men isn’t considered much of an issue.

I am a feminist because telling a man you have a boyfriend is still the only fool-proof way to reject them.

I am a feminist because women in Saudi Arabia are still not allowed to drive cars.

I am a feminist because abortion is still illegal or considered wrong in many parts of the world.

I am a feminist because women in the world are still victims of genital mutilation.

I am a feminist because men are still assumed to be paedophiles, rapists and criminals.

I am a feminist because people who are seen as feminine are often seen as weak.

I am a feminist because society still slut shames women for enjoying sex or acting promiscuously.

I am a feminist because children’s toys & games are still gender divided.

I am a feminist because some young women are still taught that being attractive is more important than being intelligent.

I am a feminist because many women still disassociate from their gender or say they don’t get along with women.

I am a feminist because men and women form less friendships than women & women or men & men.

I am a feminist because short hair and typically masculine clothing causes people to assume a woman is gay.

I am a feminist because men who appear typically feminine causes people to assume he is gay.

I am a feminist because women still earn on average 14% less than men of equal workload.

I am a feminist because my friend’s little girls are growing into women long before their little boys grow into men.

I am a feminist because some women feel the need to have breast enlargement surgery in order to meet beauty ideals.

I am a feminist because the hijab has been banned in some parts of the world.

I am a feminist because women are 8 times more likely to be killed by their partner than men.

I am a feminist because one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during her lifetime.

I am a feminist because men aged 21-35  are more likely to commit suicide than die in any other way.

I am a feminist because over 60 million girls in this world will not receive any formal education when their brothers will.

Are you a feminist too? Or are you still concerned about using the F word? What are your top reasons for calling yourself a feminist?
