DON’T TELL US WE’RE NOT BEAUTIFUL; a poem

* I wrote this poem for my friend Vick (SirVikalot) for her birthday this week and figured I’d share it with you all. Don’t forget to check out her blog!

isn’t it sad
that we’ve believed society
when it told us we weren’t pretty
when it told us to hide the scars
and stretch marks and freckles
that make us
who we are

how dare we
believe the media when it tells us
we’re not beautiful
because our thighs meet
and our bellies roll
that our imperfections
aren’t perfect

why did we let
the magazines and music videos
dictate what beauty is
because those lines and curves
and those bags under your eyes
and those perfect imperfections
they’re stunning
